What an upgrade adds to an older ducted system
Many older ducted systems still have sound fans and workable pipework, but the controls, dampers and duct layout are dated. That usually means one thermostat controlling the whole property, uneven temperatures between rooms, and higher running costs because the system has to work harder than it should. We upgrade these systems so the air goes where it is needed, and stays out of rooms that are already comfortable.
An upgrade can include motorised zone dampers, a smart thermostat, new control wiring, improved return air arrangements and airflow correction at the registers. Where needed we also replace worn actuators, add bypass relief, and reconfigure the system for better static pressure. In homes with upstairs bedrooms, sun-facing living areas or closed-off studies, the improvement is often immediate. In offices, the benefit is lower complaint levels and better control over meeting rooms, open plan areas and private offices.
- Zoning for two to eight areas, depending on the existing duct layout
- Smart thermostat control with scheduling and room targeting
- Damper and actuator replacement where older parts are failing
- Airflow balancing to reduce hot and cold spots
Our upgrade process from first visit to handover
We start with a site assessment in Johannesburg, Sandton, Randburg, Pretoria, Centurion or Pretoria East. During the visit we check the age and condition of the indoor unit, duct runs, access points, insulation, condensate drain, power supply and control cabling. We also look at the ceiling space, because some older installs leave little room for new dampers or access panels.
After that we do load calculations and review the room use. A family room that fills up in the afternoon has a different requirement from a north-facing office or a boardroom used for short meetings. Once the design is signed off, we schedule the works, order the required components and prepare the control sequence. Most upgrade jobs are completed without changing the full ducted system, which keeps downtime manageable.
- Site inspection and fault check
- Load calculation and zoning proposal
- Installation of dampers, controls and wiring
- Programming, testing and handover
What specs we work to on upgrade projects
Every system is different, so we match the upgrade to the unit size, duct sizes and available ceiling space. Typical retrofit upgrades use motorised zone dampers sized to suit the existing branches, usually in 150 mm, 200 mm or 250 mm duct runs, with insulated flexible connections where needed. Control wiring is kept neat and accessible for future servicing. Where the property has several zones, we set minimum air flow limits to protect the indoor unit and avoid coil freeze or excess static pressure.
For the controls, we generally use a programmable thermostat with weekly scheduling, temperature setbacks and zone override functions. If the site has a generator, inverter or battery backup for load-shedding, we can include restart settings and power-loss recovery so the system returns to the correct mode after an outage. Coastal humidity is not the main issue in Gauteng, but in any closed-up room we still check condensate drainage and insulation to avoid moisture problems.
We also check whether the return air path is adequate. If a system is starved for return air, no amount of fancy controls will fix it properly, so we address that first.
Pricing that depends on the system, not guesswork
System upgrade pricing depends on how many zones are needed, how easy the ceiling access is, what condition the existing ductwork is in, and whether any control boards or actuators have to be replaced. A small residential retrofit in Pretoria East will price very differently from a larger office in Sandton with multiple tenant zones. We do not price from photos alone, because hidden ceiling conditions can change the scope very quickly.
Our pricing approach is straightforward: inspect, design, quote and then proceed once you are happy with the scope. Where a system can be upgraded in stages, we will say so. That can help when a building needs urgent comfort fixes now and a fuller control upgrade later. If the installation is older, we also flag likely future maintenance items so there are no surprises after the works are complete.
- Quoted per site after inspection
- Clear separation of labour, controls and any replacement parts
- Options for staged upgrades where the budget must be phased
- No unnecessary replacement of working equipment
Maintenance intervals after the upgrade
Once the zoning is in place, the system still needs regular attention. For homes we recommend seasonal servicing once before summer and once before winter if the unit runs often. For offices and commercial properties, quarterly checks are better, especially where the system runs long hours or the building is occupied from early morning to late afternoon. In high-use sites, filters and dampers need a proper inspection at each service, not just a quick glance.
During maintenance we test zone motors, check the thermostat schedule, confirm that sensors read correctly and make sure the condensate drain is clear. We also inspect the insulation and duct joints for sweat marks or air leakage. Small issues caught early cost far less than a burnt actuator or a system that keeps cycling because one zone is stuck open. A planned service interval also helps through winter when closed buildings can expose airflow faults very quickly.
Where upgrade work is most worthwhile
Older ducted systems are common in homes and offices across Johannesburg, Sandton, Randburg, Pretoria, Centurion and Pretoria East. We see the biggest gains in properties with two-storey layouts, long duct runs, converted studies, enclosed patios used as offices, and meeting rooms that are not used all day. In these buildings, cooling the whole property evenly often wastes a lot of power.
If your current system still starts and stops but the comfort is poor, an upgrade is usually better value than replacing everything at once. We can improve room control, reduce complaints and make the system easier to live with day to day. For owners in busy urban areas, that means less fiddling with remotes, fewer call-outs, and better use of the equipment already in place.
Ian Mokoena and the Airzone team handle the assessment, design, installation and aftercare from our Johannesburg base, with Pretoria coverage as well. If you need a practical upgrade plan for an older ducted system, send the site details and we will advise on the next step.
