Our history

Airzone started with practical air-conditioning work in Johannesburg and has grown into a zoned climate control specialist for homes and offices. From the early email-only years on this domain to today’s full design, install and service team, the focus has stayed the same: careful planning, tidy work and systems that suit the space.

2009: The first Airzone jobs in Johannesburg

Airzone’s story began in 2009 in Johannesburg, when the domain was already being used for business email and the work centred on direct client support, technical advice and site visits. In those early years the focus was simple but important: understand the building, size the system properly, and keep people comfortable through the hot summers and dry winter months that Gauteng is known for.

The first jobs were built around homes, small offices and light commercial spaces that needed more than a basic cooling unit. Many properties in Sandton, Randburg and the northern suburbs had rooms that ran too warm while others stayed cold, so the need for zoned air-conditioning came through quickly. That is where the team learned the value of room-by-room dampers, correct duct sizing and controls that make sense for real daily use.

  • Practical work started with site assessments and load calculations.
  • Early installations were planned for comfort, lower running costs and easier control.
  • From the start, the business worked with Gauteng conditions in mind, including load-shedding and summer peaks.

2011 to 2014: Growing from installs to proper system design

As the workload increased, the business moved beyond basic installations and into full system design. That shift mattered because a zoned air-conditioning system is only as good as the planning behind it. A home in Pretoria East with high sun exposure needs a different layout from an office in Centurion, and a retrofit in an older Johannesburg building needs a different approach again. The team started spending more time on duct runs, return air paths, thermostat placement and airflow balancing.

During this period, the business also built stronger processes around retrofit work. Existing ceilings, finished interiors and occupied offices all require careful access planning, clean working methods and clear timelines. That practical experience shaped how Airzone still works today. It also helped the team handle the realities of municipal rules, building management approval and the kind of coordination that keeps a job moving without unnecessary delays.

  • System design became a core service, not just an extra step.
  • Retrofit installations were refined for occupied homes and offices.
  • Airflow balancing and controls programming became part of the standard handover.

2015 to 2018: Building the Pretoria coverage and service discipline

With more projects coming in from Pretoria, Centurion and Pretoria East, the business extended its reach beyond Johannesburg while keeping operations based in the city. That wider coverage brought different building types, different client expectations and longer travel planning, but it also strengthened the company’s service discipline. Jobs had to be booked carefully, materials had to be ready and call-backs had to be handled quickly.

This was also the period when seasonal servicing became more important. South African air-conditioning systems work hard during heat waves, and dust, pollen and blocked drains can cause trouble if maintenance is missed. The team focused on regular checks, fault finding and practical upgrades, especially for systems that had to keep working through summer, school terms and office deadlines. Reece Naidoo took a stronger role on installation supervision, while Ayanda Khumalo helped keep service calls and follow-ups organised.

  • Pretoria and Centurion coverage became a regular part of the business.
  • Seasonal servicing and fault finding were added to support long-term system performance.
  • Installation supervision improved job quality and handover consistency.

2019 to 2021: Smarter controls and tighter coordination

As more clients asked for easier day-to-day control, Airzone’s work shifted further toward smart thermostats and better zone management. Homes wanted quieter bedrooms at night and cooler living areas during the day. Offices wanted meeting rooms, open-plan areas and private spaces to run on their own schedules. That made controls programming a bigger part of each project, and it pushed the team to think more carefully about how people actually use a building.

Ian Mokoena remained the driving force as Managing Director, with Kagiso Dlamini taking a lead role in HVAC design and Naledi van Wyk strengthening operations. Together they refined how projects were scoped, scheduled and handed over. Megan Pretorius also helped improve customer support response times, which mattered when clients were dealing with heat, fault alarms or a system that had stopped during a power cut. Those years tested every service business, but they also confirmed the value of good follow-through and clear communication.

2022 to 2024: Retrofit specialists for real Gauteng buildings

Recent years have brought more retrofit work, more energy-conscious clients and more pressure on systems to perform in older buildings. Many Johannesburg and Pretoria properties were not originally built for modern zoned air-conditioning, so every job needs a careful site assessment and a proper load calculation before any installation starts. That is where the team’s experience has become especially useful.

New build installations also continued, especially where homeowners and developers wanted ducted systems planned from the start. The benefit is clean ceiling integration, better room-by-room control and a system that can be serviced without unnecessary disruption. Seasonal servicing, fault finding and system upgrades have remained steady parts of the business, because a well-installed system still needs attention as filters clog, sensors drift or humidity rises near the coast and in other tough conditions.

  • Retrofits now form a large part of the work in occupied homes and offices.
  • New build projects benefit from early design input and proper load calculations.
  • System upgrades help older installations keep up with modern control needs.

Today: A Johannesburg team with Pretoria reach

Today Airzone operates from Johannesburg with dedicated coverage in Pretoria, Sandton, Randburg, Centurion and Pretoria East. The team is small enough to stay hands-on and experienced enough to manage the full process from first enquiry to final commissioning. That includes site assessments, design, load calculations, installation, airflow balancing, controls programming and after-sales support. It also means clients speak to people who understand the work, not just the paperwork.

The business has continued in a steady way from its earlier years on this domain because the core approach has not changed. Ian Mokoena still leads with a practical eye for what works, and the wider team keeps the service side moving on time. Whether the job is a family home that needs better bedroom control or an office that must stay comfortable through load-shedding, the aim is the same: build a system that suits the building, the budget and the way people live or work in it.

If you are looking at a new project or an upgrade to an existing system, Airzone is set up to help from the first call. The business has grown, but it still works like a local specialist should, with proper attention to detail and no unnecessary fuss.
